Metro rail is no longer a dream for Bangladesh. The future was in vivid imagination to the residents of Dhaka is now in abstract reality. In the coming 2020 people of Dhaka would be able to benefit themselves from the metro rail service, presumably by escaping hours of traffic jams in a few minutes.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company (DMTC), a company under the road and transportation ministry operating the Dhaka Metro Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) also known as metro rail service. It is a public transportation facility proposed to counter the terrible suffering of increased traffic jams.

The project is partially funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and a part of it is expected to be in service in the year 2020.

The metro rail project has 5 lines of projects operating in different routes throughout Dhaka city. The lines are MRT 1, MRT 2, MRT 4, MRT 5, MRT 6. Currently, MRT line 6 is under construction and the estimated cost of the project is $2.82 billion. line’s construction is also in progress but the first line to operate will be line 6.

The project work started in 2014 and currently is in the trial process. The line would start off from Uttara connecting to the other end of Dhaka, Motijheel.

In line 6 there are a total of 16 stations to be made to transport people from the busiest hubs. The line would start from Uttara and take a diversion towards Mirpur, then going through Farmgate and Dhaka University it would reach Motijheel. The total length of the line is 20.10 k.m.

Line 6 will have 24 six sets of commuter cars that would be traveling ceaselessly on the route. The coaches will be fully air-conditioned and there will be an automatic fare collection system.

There will be a total of 8 doors in each car, 4 on each side. For higher surveillance, there would be CCTV cameras inside and outside of the coaches. The commuter would run maximum at a speed of 100 km/h.

Final Words

The Dream project of Bangladesh is coming to reality by the inauguration of the first metro rail line, line 6. This service would cut off countless hours from people used to wasting on traffic jams. Usually, a person has to plan ahead by 3 or 4 hours if he has to journey to Motijheel from Uttara at pick hours.

Reducing the time to 38 minutes is still unbelievable to the people of this metro city where millions of work hours are being wasted being stuck in traffic jams. We are expecting the metro rail to be fully operational in the last part of 2022 and mark another groundbreaking milestone of becoming a digital Bangladesh.
