A green building reduces its negative impact on the environment and in contrast, can create a positive impact. It is possible through sustainable architecture, design, construction and operation.
Green buildings ensure the highest possible preservation of resources like raw materials, energy, water, etc. and minimize environmental pollution-fighting against global warming and greenhouse gasses emission.
Materials used in building construction play an important role to make a building sustainable. Concrete, cement and brick are some of these materials. For the production of these materials, a lot of energy is consumed and a lot of carbon dioxide gasses are emitted.
So eco-friendly materials need to be used to build a sustainable building. Moreover, we need to train and encourage the architect, designers, material providers and builders to build sustainable or green buildings.
The motives for sustainable buildings include economic, environmental and social benefits. Green buildings bring the techniques and skills to eliminate the ultimate impact of building on the environment and humans.
The target is to start a practice of constructing energy-efficient and environmentally friendly buildings.The following matters people have to keep in mind to ensure the sustainability of the constructed buildings.
Bangladesh Green Building Council was founded in 2008, formerly known as the Sustainable Built Environment Initiative – Bangladesh. They started working with a great mission of making the country greener.
They tried to assemble all the organizations responsible for building houses, factories, industries, etc., and encourage them to create a green environment for sustainability.
A centralized board was proposed by the council to issue LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification to any project or builders who are interested in achieving it.
LEED certification is introducing a positive competition to make a cleaner, greener and sustainable Bangladesh. Among 177 LEED-certified buildings in Bangladesh, the majority of them are industrial buildings. 31% platinum, 58% gold, 8% of them are silver categories and 2 % only certified. LEED provides certification based on the below-mentioned factors.

It is one of the ideas to make Dhaka green. Dhaka is the most populous city in Bangladesh. Environmental pollution is a major concern here. The green building concept is a solution to this problem. Additionally planting green trees is also a problem-solving concept. But it has been difficult to plant more trees due to the lack of adequate spaces inside Dhaka. So, rooftop gardening is a very interesting and effective way to reduce the crisis.
Rooftop gardening is an environmentally friendly plan to make a garden on the roof of a building. It creates the opportunity of enjoying nature from closer and ensures the best use of limited spaces in Dhaka. Rooftop gardening has recently become the most popular idea among the dwellers of Dhaka to make a green environment.

There is a high energy and water demand in the construction sectors in Bangladesh and the construction system here is not energy and water-efficient. However, electricity supply and consumption have increased in a large amount in Bangladesh. Fossil fuel is the main source of electricity that leads to high GHG (Green House Gas) and power generation.
To make a change in the traditional construction practices, many collaborative actions are needed to be taken e.g., creating awareness among the mass people about the benefits of sustainable buildings, creating technical experts for the design, plan and making it possible.
